Hiking Folsom CA: My Favorite Trail
Why not hike Northern California? Rattlesnake Bar, part of the Folsom Lake Recreational Area, has great trails. Along Auburn-Folsom Road, between Highway 80 and Highway 50, start at Maidu Drive.
The American River is an important water source for the Sacramento area, in addition to creating an exciting array of recreational activities. Hiking is one of those options, and is available at many areas of the river. I like the trail to Rattlesnake Bar best because it is more of a local trail. It is not as crowded as many of the other areas, such as the trails available near La Riviera Drive near Folsom Boulevard.
Some people, like me, prefer to park near Maidu Drive. There are not many places to park, but it is a nice area to start the hike. Others travel the nine miles or so to the boat ramp at Rattlesnake Bar, where there is more parking. Hikers working on fitness may choose to follow the steep slope leading to Oregon Bar. Those more concerned with recreation might select the paved Auburn-Cool Trail to Folsom Dam, or stay on the back trail to Folsom Lake. A personal hint: one is less likely to get turned around if the hike starts from Maidu Drive towards Rattlesnake Bar.
Not everyone uses this trail for exploring. Trout fishing is a favorite activity, making it likely to encounter fishermen year-round. I like that after four miles or so, I get that feeling of unreality. I look up and see beautiful houses on the hilltops. I glance down towards the lake and realize I am somewhere in the middle. Seasons are prevalent in Northern California, so I find plant shoots in the spring and early blooming flowers, and in the fall get excellent views of the changing leaves. Evergreens prevent a colorless hike in the winter.
Besides the avid fishermen, you might encounter deer, rabbits, turkey, and quail. Stay alert, though, because mountain lion, rattlesnake, and even a bear or two might cross your path. Be wary of going off the path into bushes, since ticks do carry Lyme disease. Good cautionary advice is available from the U.S. Department of Forest Service, and the California Division of Forestry. Creatures of the wild are generally most willing to avoid us, but their survival depends on the ability to attack, if threatened.
I always recommend the buddy system. If no one you know wants to hike with you, extend your circle of friends. Ask at work and at church and at your children's schools. Somewhere is a like spirit in need of a hiking companion.
